However, the word ‘step’ couldn’t really describe her sluggish and pitiful movement.Her left arm was engulfed in a terrifyingly huge cast, cradled in a neck sling and clutched closely to her chest. The weight of the cast pulled her neck forward, almost causing her to hunch over.But it wasn’t the massive arm cast that made it hard for Ivy to walk. From the knee down, her right leg was encased by a cumbersome shell, which strangely grew wider and wider as it crept down, and the plaster contraption became far much thicker than the ankle itself. She wasn’t able either to lift or shift the awful weight of the plaster anchor, yet she moved forward, since, bizarrely, a wheel was fitted to the plaster-wrapped sole.Ivy just pushed the huge load almost like a shopping trolley. She had taken no more than five or six steps when she suddenly slumped down on a chair. At the same moment, the door of Cast Room 2 swung open, and the sounds of quarrelling flooded the hallway.‘Please stop! Don't do this to me!' a girl shouted.'You have to understand, Miss Piper, that we had no other choice.'Finally, the patient called Piper left the Cast Room. But she didn’t come out on her own legs, but in a wheelchair rolled out by a nurse.The nurse brought the wheelchair to a stop by the door, and patted the patient's plaster-covered shoulder. ‘I’m sorry, Miss Piper, but I’ll leave you here for a few minutes. I hope you're not going anywhere until I get back.''Yes, Mrs Rogers.' Piper just grumbled something, failing to find humour in the situation as she was unable to move the several tonnes of plaster that was impeccably moulded around her figure.She had two striking features: firstly, she had dyed her hair reddish-pink, and secondly (and more importantly), she was adorned in a hideous cast whose thickness rivalled the other woman's leg cast. Every part of her body, except her head, was enveloped in a huge, continuous plaster covering that stretched from her neck to her toes.Ivy stared at the woman in the full body cast. 'Oh, my gosh. Until now, I believed that my cast was the biggest and thickest in the world.'The wheelchair-bound, statuesque woman also surveyed her fellow patient. 'Mine's bigger for sure, but I think yours is thicker. For the moment. My name is Piper.'‘Hi, I’m Ivy.’Piper's full body cast was undoubtedly more extensive than Ivy's short arm cast and short leg cast combined. Its insane dimension perfectly erased Piper’s original body contours, replacing them with something human-like, yet terrifically strange. The thick shoulder spica casts symmetrically protruded from the plaster armour surrounding her torso, but, due to their enormous weight, were connected and supported by two rods to the body cast.Her legs looked like two shapeless plaster tubes jutting forward. Promoting stability, rods ran from knee to knee, and from ankle to ankle. The arm and leg casts had a narrow opening for the knuckles, but their thickness made them look like cave-like cavities, with the tips of her fingers and toes visible only at the very bottoms of the holes.'Did it hurt so much?' Ivy looked at Piper with regret.Piper raised her eyebrows. 'What?''When they put the casts on you. I heard you asked them to stop, so I thought that you must have been in a lot of pain.''No, actually it didn't hurt at all.' Piper smiled. ‘It’s not from an accident. I'm just a victim of the medical computer system.''You mean, a big and heavy computer server fell on you?''No, I'm in a full body cast by mistake,' Piper said. ‘After a real accident, I had a shoulder spica cast on my right arm and a single hip spica cast on my right leg. Because there was a shortage of cast supply in the hospital, my first casts weren’t made from plaster… but from concrete.’Ivy’s eyebrows shot up. 'From what?''I swear I’m telling you the truth!’ Piper said. ‘When my broken bones healed, the surgeons didn't use a cast saw but a hammer drill and a jackhammer. You can imagine what happened to my bones again... I became more injured than before.''Unbelievable.'‘Afterwards, I was treated by a very careful doctor who ordered me to be plastered up to my neck.''But why?''Because the previous casts had been from concrete, the next time the doctors became obsessed with adhering to the medical protocols so that I wouldn't sue the hospital for medical malpractice. So, they put me in this excessively large and protective, full body plaster cast that met all the medical requirements.''But how did it become so thick?' Ivy asked.'There must be a glitch in the IT system. It must be stuck in an infinite loop or something. It repeatedly reminds the doctors to put me in casts again and again. Yesterday, the nurses on the morning, afternoon, and evening shifts brought me down to the Cast Room, and added new layers of plaster on the previous one. In a matter of days, my full body cast will be as thick as yours, and in a week, it'll become so thick that I won't even be able to get through any door.''But don't the doctors realise how absurd this is?' Ivy asked.‘They do, but they stick to the protocol, otherwise, they would receive a demerit point or what, and would be punished with a salary cut.''So, you're getting thicker cast every day, and it's going to last forever?' Ivy asked.'Or until the medical computer system is shut down and rebooted.'‘Perhaps I can help you.''Do you have any knowledge about computers?' Piper asked in hope.'Not me, but my neighbour Elliott is very good at it.'‘I wish he could do that before my casts get so colossal that the floor collapses under the weight of my full body cast.' Piper examined Ivy's leg cast. 'Is yours this big by mistake, too?''No, unfortunately not. I've actually had several accidents, and this is the fourth time I've been given a leg cast. I've tried to leave the hospital three times... but somehow, I’m always brought back here in a short time.''What happened to you?''Early this morning, I was cycling to the shop, and I fell. The ambulance transported me to this hospital, and they put a cast on my arm and leg.' Ivy rubbed the surface of the casts. 'Of course, the first casts were just normal size. Then they released me from the Cast Room. Unfortunately, the lift wasn't working, so I tried to go down the stairs. I wasn’t used to having casts yet, and I missed the steps, and I stumbled...''... and you broke your leg and arm again,' Piper said.'Yes. The doctors were amazed that I returned to the Cast Room in fifteen minutes. The plaster had cracked, but the bones hadn't realigned, so they decided to add another layer to the casts. They let me out a second time. This time, luckily, the elevator was working. I got a little further, and I was already in the lobby when I slipped on a banana peel… and I fell again.'‘And you found yourself in the Cast Room again.'‘The doctors weren’t surprised to see me again. They just quickly put another layer of plaster on. I hobbled out of the Cast Room with a massive and heavy, three-layered cast. I climbed down the stairs, went through the lobby, and made it all the way to the car park, where an SUV carelessly ran over my foot, completely shattering three layers of solid plaster.'‘Not a long ago, I heard a scream that was so loud that it shook the windows.''Yes, it was me. In the Cast Room, the doctors cordially greeted me like an old friend. To make absolutely sure that my leg and arm were protected from any further accidents, they put on several extra layers. And, there it is! Its weight is thirty kilograms, so much that I can't even lift my leg, but they attached a wheel to the sole so that I would be able to move around somehow.'‘How many layers does it have?’‘Well, I stopped counting this time.’‘It must be very weighty, indeed,’ Piper said.Ivy sighed. ‘I'm not sure how I’ll manage to get home. This leg cast is incredibly bulky, even if I roll it on a wheel. I have to stop after every five steps to rest for a while.'Appearing to be a plaster statue from the neck down, Piper peered at her enviously. ‘At least, you can move on your own. I feel so helpless.'The sound of footsteps filled the hallway, and Piper and Ivy looked at the approaching nurse.Mrs Rogers clapped her palms together in delight. ‘Well done, Miss Piper! You've made a new friend already.''I was talking to Ivy about whose cast was bigger,' Piper said.Ivy joined the conversation. 'Mine is thicker, but hers is much larger.''Oh, what a weird competition!' Mrs Rogers said. 'But don't even hope to get into the Guinness Book of World Records, because that category is already reserved for someone else. And even if believe that your casts are big, they're nothing compared to the record-breaking one.''And who holds the record?’ Ivy asked.Mrs Rogers mused. 'I can't remember her name. She was named after two months.'‘Didn’t she have any name for two months?''No, I mean, she was called June May or something like that.'‘How big was her cast?' Piper asked.'Was? Not “was” but “is”. She is in Rooms 109 and 110 right now!''Two rooms at the same time?' both Piper and Ivy asked.Mrs Rogers nodded. 'Yes, indeed. She's embedded in such a huge cast. It's not just one or two layers, it's astoundingly four feet thick! She’s been in a lot of accidents. She was a skydiver, but the parachute didn't open, and she plunged onto the hard tarmac of a highway where he was hit by a truck. And right after that, run over by a road roller.''Ouch,' Ivy said.'Then her ambulance crashed, and next, she survived the accident of the rescue helicopter, and the earthquake in the first hospital where she was treated. Now, she is protected by the absolute safety of thick plaster casts in our institution, and she’s doing quite well… At least, we hope she’s quite well. Piper glanced at Ivy.Ivy tapped her leg cast. 'First, I'd like to get home without another accident.'Piper frowned, too. 'Another layer or two, and I won’t fit in a wheelchair anymore, and I won’t be able to leave my room.'Ivy struggled to stand up from the chair and, with great difficulty, she manoeuvred her massive leg cast, which rolled along the floor on a creaking wheel attached to its sole.
